Yer.

I've decided to get a bare block from Turner along with the H180 cam and build the engine myself. I'm happy with engine builds, Although most of mine so far have been 4 pot and turbocharged. Looking forward to the V8 now. :)

I've sent Frida Turner an email saying I'm in Surrey on the 7th+8th of next month. Means I can drop off the old block and pick up the new one at the same time, saves on messing with postage and exchange surcharges etc....

Also means I can chat to Richard, and leave my ECU there to be sent to Mark Adams :)

When you say you engine was 'tapping' is that the liner sliding up and down the bore when the engine gets warm or what???

Mines just popped the 2nd head gasket in 6 months. It was making a tapping sound which I took to be the HG leaking, the centre 6 head bolts had come loose so don't know whether to remove my lump and strip or retry with new HGs and bolts....sorry to threadjack!

My tapping was from rocker failure. In the pic below you can see where the steel thrust pad has fallen off and the valve has worn into the softer alloy rocker.

MartynV8's liner tap however was indeed a liner moving up and down in the bore. This pic from his other thread shows where the liner had worn a ring onto the lower surface of the head.

He can fill you in on the finer details of his diagnosis.

Thanks JordanTD5, sorry, only just picked up on this.
yes, as soon as mine reached operating temp, the liner would start moving with the piston (only about 1.5mm). It was slowly chewing it's way through the fire ring in the head gasket & into the cylinder head so the tap was getting louder & louder.
If your taking the heads off you can check to see if any liners have dropped. There should be no lip between the liner & deck of the block, if there is the slightest of lips you can feel then chances are they have slipped.
I suspect mine was caused by a local overheating of the cylinder as when i stripped my old engine down tha cam lobe for the exhaust valve on that cylinder was almost round.

Both my headgaskets also went within 2 months of each other. I should really have changed both when i did the 1st one.

i runninmg the h180..4.6 with a Lr service rebuild.non tophat. but megasquirt ecu so mappable tuning and running LOW water temp..ie fans switch on at 81c..
oh its running 10psi and nitros too..done over 20k now..on lpg...

love the h180 (full mapable autobox with megashift)...Turner had a good hour convo with me, was very interested in what i was up to (when cam deciding time)...if i was to allow someone to build me an engine..(fat chance) it would be them..
