Hi, I'm having a couple of problems with my Disco. (I think it's a Disco 2, how do I know? It's N plate).
SHe hasn't run for a while and has been standing.

One problem is when I am changing gears (mainly when I change down at a slow speed) there is a clunk from underneath.

I have also noticed, that when descending a steep hill, I put it in a low gear and proceed slowly, using the gearbox to slow me. The clunking comes every few seconds while freewheeling in gear. There is also a jolt at the same time as the clunk.

It seems that its something loose, or catching. I'm thinking maybe a prop or one of the joints on the end. How can I test this?

Thanks

Chock wheels, put in neutral, handbrake off. Climb under and check universal joints and sliding joints on the props. Anything other than rotational mean the u/j's need changing. Any play on the sliding joint means a new prop

Thanks mate. I'll give that a go.

Not really. Yes you have to remove the pinn carrier and then dismantle the diff but it is an easy to follow job. Rear is easier than the front. I did mine without a jack lol and simple tools.

All the bearings in the unit only come to about £40 so its not expensive either
