Hi ,
I just incountered another issue with the truck (1998 p38 petrol 4.6) . It wouldn't start (immobilised error ) so I keyed in the code to the drivers door and she fired up in park but when I tried to put it into drive it would not enguage , then when I tried to put it back in park it gives a plastic gear grinding sound and will not go into park . Any ideas ?

if it grinds trying to put it in to park ,youve either got a transfer box in neutral or 2 bust diffs etc

There's a motor to shift the gearbox between high and low ratio. Are all connections to that good? Any messages on the dash? You can put a fuse in one of the slots to force the transfer box into neutral. From memory might be fuse 11 in the ones under the driver's seat? Try putting a fuse in that and see what happens (car shouldn't go anywhere!).

I think @jamesmartin is probably the best diagnosis so far.
Can't remember on these if there is a propshaft between the output of the gearbox and the transfer case or if the transfer case is bolted directly to the gearbox. If it's a propshaft, you'll be able to see it turning in D if the transfer is in neutral.

Directly bolted to the gearbox.

Yes, if JamesMartin speaks you'd do well to listen. It is just a case of homing in on the problem now.

Some Yahoo had put a fuse in slot 11 , whipped it out and problem solved ! cheers

if it grates when going into park your either moving or theres a break in the drive train to the wheels allowing g/box to turn, neutral t /box is one of the common causes, knowledge is more important usually
