Hi
When i lift the clutch to set off there is a loud metallic, almost like a bang. Happens in reverse as well. Prop shafts all ok but when ii rotate the prop back and forth i can hear a clatter in the gearbox? I think the box is a LT77, reverse is left and up from first. Guess the gearbox is u/s but can it be repaired easily?

it is lt 77 .remove pto cover passenger side rear of transfer box check splines in input gear and mainshaft one worn both are ,gear on 1.410 or 1.667 will pullout easily to aid checking,do you have other symptoms does it drive allright after setting off ?
 
ere James - is it the same procedure on an R380?

if so what chance is there of the mainshaft being OK?

changing the intermediate gear is one thing - mainshaft, summat else :(
 
same as lt77 in checking main shaft if 1.4 or 1.6 gear wil pull out 1.2 wont as intermediate gear high ratio is rear most gear of cluster input drive been middle 1.6 high is just below input drive on cluster teeth 1.4 half way up and 1.2 level ,but as different pitch of teeth 1.2 wont come across high gear ,not all ealier r80s had cross drilled input gears and you do find some with worn splines like lt77,obviously worth checking end float which there shouldnt be any while pto cover off save removing sump ,often if there is some (little) i take it up on 30mm nut ,enough freeplay means brgs shot diffs are prone to break up too but can be felt while rotating both output flanges at same time one in each hand most t/box problems are poor servicing, running through gears with engine running can also help with checking gearbox while input gear out better 5than putting t/box in neutral as all gears still turn except the diff
 
Would it be a stupid idea to change the intermediate gear in the trans box and not do the Kai shaft in the gear box? The slack in mine is now to the point that if I am in-between power and engine breaking (no load onthe engine) the engine revs freely untill slack it taken up, then revs drop at is takes up drive, then revs rise again... And so on, so i get rocked to sleep while driving!
 
input gear ,intermediate is one in middle supported by shaft with 30mm socket size nut, you could do but will still shear main shaft soonere than later ,i did offer to help you with it i think
 
Yehh cheers James, just trying to be a cheap skate! After the engine is in, that's next on the list, guna have to try and sort a lift over to you tho!

Other symtoms are a bang when putting my foot down on accelarator in any gear including reverse. Changed oil and apart from being a bit dirty no metal chunks. Will take pto cover off and chack, will i need to drain the oil first?
