Hi all

I have a freelander 2002 v6 with auto box

Now ive never driven a auto before but

when it changes up and down throw the gears it almost snaps/jolts !!!!

im sure that cant be right ? surely it should be smooth ?

all gears worth ie 1,2,4,D then the sports 1 and 2

only gear thats very smooth is R

what could this be ?

OIL LEVEL??????

No its your solenoids, can be expensive to have fixed, unless your handy with jacto auto boxes.
I wouldn't drive it til you've had it fixed. You could knacker the box up. And that would be expensive.

How is the lower engine tie bar? If there is slop in the large bush, the changes will be rough. However I suspect that it could do with a fluid change ;) It's not done many miles so, fingers crossed, it's nothing serious.

fingers crossed just fluid, is it hard to do ?

i know theres threads ref it and fluid needs to be at 35 c but how hard is it?
 
thanks mad hat man, i will ,ive quickly read it a while ago as had nothing to do on my td4 and was bored lol

so as long as i undo the correct bolts ,correct temp and go throw the gears while engine running it should be easy ?

how much is gearbox oil in uk ? just read i need 4 litres

so if its not the oil then the solenoids?
can they be fixed?

any pics anywhere of the solenoids so i know what im looking at ?

I will i love taking pics esp that way if i need to revist a repair ive done i have a diary of events lol

I think though and learnt myself to ensure going through them slowly step by step due to the complexity of these boxes and not jumping to any conclusions

ie the good thing by testing solenoids is it gives an accurate diagnosis of there status and also is free to test

even giving the box a good run if the cars been allowed to stand for a weeks on end can sometimes help

but more importantly couldn't agree with u more of how important to follow the sequence in replacing the oil should be adhered to , as we have all read about boxes being destroyed by under , over filling them or even the wrong bolt being removed

had a very quick look today at gearbox and think there may be a slight leak from here



OR are these the bolts you should never touch????
 
No problem. It's the side pan. There's no gasket. They use a thin bead of sealer. I had a leak on this too. Mine was at the very bottom. Wipe it clean and see where it leaks when standing.
 
ya that looks where mines coming from but only a small one drip takes a while to form

i assume over time this would not help matters lol ,will have a look again tomorrow

also going to check the ohms of the solenoids via the cable under the ecu like on your vid well as long as my blue connectors come apart easily like yours did lol

only prob i have is i have no temp probe to check oil temp :-(, if i start the car and leave to run for say 10mins will the gearbox oil warm? or does it have to be used to warm it up? also will 10 mins bring temp to required temp ish?
