I have a Defender LT77 mated to a Disco LT230, its leaking at the two faces in which they mate up! (Deffo)

Can anyone please tell me what the seals and gaskets are there between the two boxes? And which ones are most likely to cause this leak?

Im just goin to replace the lot as its not just a standard landrover leak :(

Cheers, Scott

Check What kind of oil is dripping, that should tell you which box has leak. Both seals are the same, they run on a collar on the main box output shaft. Transfer box seal is easy when boxes are split, main box seal is a bit more of a fiddle. If collar is worn it is possible to change it with hub puller. If leak is from transfer box there is also a possibility it is from o ring on one of lay shafts - took me ages to find that

Cheers mate!

Whats the easiest way of identifying which oil it is? Either way will it be a case of splitting the transfer from the gearbox?

the main box should be running ATF which is normaly a lot thinner than ep90 in the transfer box :D

Ah of course! Its deffo ATF then mate! I now know that its the two seals one in each box, but its as if there is supposed to be a proper gasket, like a head gasket to seperate the two...... :(

thats what the oil seal are there for, nothing should pass them

Yeah no worries mate, i must have knocked one of the seals out of place when i fitted the boxes together :(

Cheers mate

use Sean's patentent long 10mm bolt trick when putting the boxes together works wonders, you'll need 10 least 3 100mm long 10mm bolts use them as guies to locate the boxes ;)
