Hi, My Series 2 is running a four speed manual with Fairey overdrive from a 1980 Range Rover. Gear box is shot and needs replacing I would like to fit a five speed. Question I have is will a later classic five speed fit with out a vast amount of messing about? It's not running a Land Rover engine and I don't know what the original Range Rover engine was.
Any help is appreciated.

You've posted this before, you might get e better response if you post in the tratters section (Series), it not a question for P38 owners, they mostly leave such things to the butler.

Thought I had given you some sort of guidance in your previous post
You did and thank you, you are right there is defiantly more to think about on this matter. I was really wonderingly if there were a gearbox that shared the same casings or mounting points.
The problem I have is buying someone's project and a lack of Lamd Rover knowledge!!

Then that's even more reason to look for another good gearbox and put the O/D unit on it .:)

lt85 five speed..or lt77 long stick..both with lt230 behind it.

both have gear lever in very similar place.

lt77 short stick, r380 will work too, but gear shift much further back towards rear of car. AND must be from v8 motor not diesel..

prefered choise lt85..but you wont find a good un..ex v8 110 or 90..

the gearbox listed above must all be from v8..the 85 and long stick 77 will be..they are same bellhousing pattern as lt95, so will be direct swap EXCEPT you will be wanting new clutch plate as different splines..spigot dia is the same though at 3/4..pressure plates are the same as yours.

ALSO source lt230 from old 3 speed auto rangie as its 1:1 ratio, giving u decent gearing..these are rare now though...DONT USE defender lt230 or your top speed will be 50mph!!
