Driving along in my 1992 90 200 Tdi the other week there was a shudder from the drivetrain followed by a loss of power. This continued for 500yds followed by a total loss of drive with a gear grinding noise with clutch out that dissapears when clutch is depresed.Could select gear poitions but very stiff. AA brought me home and the landy has been outside ever since. I have drained the oil from the gearbox and there was very little oil (1 1/2 pt.) I am going to attempt to remove the gearbox myself. Does anyone have any tips or any advice what may have happened.
 
i would remove transfer box first because i have seen it before where the splines ont he output shaft of the gearbox going into the transfer box wear out

no but this could be a fault he could also have two faults with it not just one the way to tell if its the box is when you drain the oil is there ant metal withing the oil you drained ?
 
perhaps the lack of oil caused something to seize. Im just speculating i dnt know, gearboxes are one part ive never touched on a LR yet.
 
My guess would be the bronze selector forks. Softest part, only splash fed when there's enough oil - if you haven't ditched the oil, can you see sparkly bits in it if you stir it up? That's be the bronze, which doesn't, of course, stick to the magnetic pin.

Tips wise. Engine crane, remove floor panels, centre seat panel, transmission tunnel two parts, gear levers and hi/lo and diff lock mechanism, three wire, speedo cable, handbrake cable, battery earth connector, (I forgot that, wondered why they wouldn't drop down - it's quite strong really) clutch slave cylinder (careful - I was wearing glasses and the piston popped out and sprayed me), exhaust middle section, propshafts, crossmember, support engine with a jack, boxes on chains and crane, gearbox mounts, bellhousing nuts. Think that's it. Lower engine and boxes until the boxes can slide back under the edge of the seat box, and pull.

Haynes covers it fairly well, but their wrong on the supporting bit.

If you have a 2" lift you can drop them onto a sheet of hardboard (shiny side down) and slide 'em out, otherwise you'll need to jack it up a bit.
 
tis much easier if you drop the tranny box first - becomes a 1 person rather than a 2 person task
