Try Pembrokeshire first, there is a fellow who was a member over on LRUK, username "Zollaf" who has a business there specialising in Disco 1s and who also rebuilds series boxes. In fact it is his wife who is the real gearbox expert. Problem is Zollaf hasn't posted on LRUK since June. Get your yellow pages out. Sorry I can't offer anything more...

Its not a hard job to do one yourself, the hardest parts are getting it out and back in. I'd only done motorbike gearboxes before but I found the series box very straighforward. It is heavy and i paid a mobile mechanic to come and refit it. I didn't do a a full rebuild, only replacing parts that had failed: 1st and 3rd and 3-4 syncho, parts came to about £120 and refitting £60 - that was from floor to first bellhousing bolt, I did the rest of the installing. One option is to buy a used box off e-bay and treat it as a training project so you learn how to rebuild, if it goes well you have a rebuilt box, if not you know your limits and are happier to pay someone else. There's a number of very good posts on various boards showing how to do it.
 
its quite hard to find people that do older boxes. most over here usually try to fit a box that has parts widely avaible.

Yes, you are lucky in the US to have so many conversion kits available for different gearboxes into Land Rovers. As far as I know there are none at all in the UK.

Just do it yourself, not too tricky as suggested, you just need time and patience. Parts are cheap (well they were a few yrs back!) and its a simple box as they go. Just have a good supply of random old spanners for them as i found the the nuts and bolts all manner of random flavours and sizes. There is a bloke in Aberystwyth who builds them too.

the nuts and bolts are whitworth, but you can manage with metric sockets and spanners, more patience and setting is needed with those boxes than more modern ones
