(Classic Rangerover, 4-speed manual gearbox)

Gearbox emits a rattle/chatter noise.... but becomes silent when clutch pedal depressed.... it has been doing this for a long while without apparent problems.

Any ideas welcomed.

usually just the release bearing. not a very expensive part.
most peeps change the clutch at the same time though whilst the box is out.
saves doing it again later on.

esp if the dealer is doing it at their labour rates!

Thankyou ormus, I was hoping it might be the release bearing or perhaps loose clutch springs.... but someone suggested to me that maybe it could be the layshaft which then got me worrying :eek: .... but I couldn't understand why a noise from the layshaft would come and go when the clutch is depressed (but then again, gearboxes have always been slightly baffling to me LOL! )
 
ps.
just seen a 4x4 mailorder site. and they are selling the clutch kit complete for any LR 2.5 diesel for approx 55 quid.

afaik, the release bearing is the same for the v8. im sure the plate is different though.

My vehicle is a bit of a hybrid: early two door classic range rover, fitted with a Mercedes 3-litre five cylinder diesel lump mated to the rangie 4-speed box.... it's kind of slow, but pulls like a tractor.

What sort of clutch set-up it's got is anyone's guess.... when the time comes I'll just have to pull it apart and see what's in there!

Well you asked the question !
If it was just the thrust bearing it would make the noise when you press the clutch,not make it go quiet.The noise stops because the drag of the oil allows everything to stop rotating when the clutch is pressed.The noise is most likely a combination of worn bearings and gears.As long as it has plenty of clean oil in it and doesnt jump out of gears etc,carry on driving it.They were never very quiet - even when new,and can be very rough but go on for miles - but not without oil.(I say that because they like to do a bit of territory marking on owners drives):D

What you say makes complete sense, thanks. It has been making this noise for a long time without apparent problems and there is no significant leakage from the unit so I will carry on regardless for now. I know of a farmer who has a crappy old two-door that he is thinking of breaking up, so I might try and get the box off that to rebuild (if the price is right).
