i was wondering if anyone could help in any way,
i own a 1986 defender 90,

im a bit of a novice at this, i have a slight problem with my gearbox, sometimes it wont let me go into 4th and 5th gear and reverse has become increadibly easy to put in but slips out quite often, also the gears feel like they have moved so sometimes when i try to put in 5th, it will actually be 3rd, this is becoming quite interesting when going on the motorway

any advise would be greatly appriciated

I have similar issue with 1989 model: 3rd is always fun to find and 1st can only be found from 2nd.

I found changing the oil in the box helped (amazing amount of metal on the magnetic plug) somewhat, but can still be a challenge now.

Doesn't sound good.

You need to speak to James Martin, he knows gearboxes very well.

He'll be along here soon I should think or you could try and PM him (jamesmartin)

He is a gearbox reconditioner so may be able to help!!

have a look at the botom of gear stick ,the turret has 2 bolts on either side adjusting these alters position of stick for 3rd /4th selection when stick pushed to either side it should spring back to 3rd/4th alignment ,height of screws also alters spring pressure, further into turret greater the spring pressure ,also if you remove turret there a 5mm grub screw that comes loose in selector yoke which alters stick and gear position

ideal, thanks guys, i will play about with it and see what happens,

i have also been told that it could be the gate has worn away?

ither way i will keep you posted on what the problem was

thanks again
