Hi all,

Last week on my way home I had to pull out quickly from a road junction. As I continued home I noticed what seemed to be a misfire as I approached 50 miles per hour. I got home checked everything and it seemed fine.

The next day the car was fine for about 20 miles and then again the misfire / hesitation at just below 50. I pulled over and surfed to this site on my smartphone and after reading I decided it was most likely the torque converter. I decided to try and get home gently.

As I approaching an island I got the error message to say the gearbox was in failsafe mode, and it would not change gear. I tried manual but although the numbers changed on the dash, they kept returning to 5. I had to try and clear the island as I was blocking it. It basically limped off the island and I got just the other side before the revs just went up as if the clutch was slipping.

I recovered the car and when I plugged in allcomms it gave a gearbox fault as gear monitor 5. I cleared the fault and tried to see if it now worked again. As you select reverse it works and the vehicle will go backwards with no slipping. But as soon as you select D all drive is lost and neither forward or reverse works until you power off the vehicle and leave it a bit.

The vehicle has done 140,000 but the box and torque converter were changed at 89,000.

Now I know that this probably means a gearbox and torque converter, but I am wondering how much damage has been done.

Any comments other than telling me that I should not pull out of road junctions quickly, would be appreciated :)

Phil

Condition of the gearbox can only be seen once you dismantle it.

Drain the oil and check for excess metal filings

Could well be the TQ, might or might not have trashed the gearbox at the same time

Fingers crossed for you :)

Sounds terminal...

The GM box on the TD6 has two failure modes...Trashed TQ, or Trashed TQ that trashes the box....

The fact you will still get drive after powering off, means it may not be totalled...

There are reports of the clutch speed sensors failing...but given your report of a misfire type event - i.e. juddering, that could mean the TQ is fecked.

Draining the oil and checking the filter may give an indication of the condition of the box, but it doesn't sound great to me!!
