Evening all, so my p38 2.5 (bmw engine) on a 96 plate, auto, keeps stalling when I put it in drive or 1st.

I've just replaced the injector pump, (need it timed) and got it running after being parked for about a year.

Ive noticed that the dash keeps flashing gearbox overheat, yet the car hasn't even moved.

I've read that the temp sensor for the gearbox is known for being faulty. Is it just a case of replacing this? Or Could anyone shed some light as to the cause why it stalls when you select a gear?

Cheers in advance Barry

Thought it causes cut out when you put it in D
No, the torque converter is there to take the load. However if the idle speed is low of the FIP miss timed there may be a problem. The EDC should pick up the drop in revs as D is selected and compensate.
If the sprag clutch fails you can only get drive by manually selecting 1st gear.

When gearbox overheat showed up on mine it was battery fault. Check battery first and earths

Battery is a old battery, so will be changing for a new one. I'm going the to get the garage to to time the pump and I'll see what happens from there.

Cheers

I only used search function then bought best/cheapest I could find after 3days internet searching. When I mentioned it to the lads here turned out I’d had slightly different one, more expensive and still needed trickle charging
Thankfully Brian found a voltage regulator to that sorted it and now powers everything, doesn’t demand trickle. I’ve even welded a starter together with it once and it’s fine

MF31-1000 shows as having the terminal posts centred on the short side. Not sure it will fit my 2 main cable lengths.
Would be a real bugger to get one and find the cabling is inadequate. lol :D

It fits in the P38, the cables reach OK.

Reach okay on mine. Is as big as you can get in there so they stretch little further.

I’d give you a pic but uploads out, may be able to see it in my avatar as box got destroyed in the roll.

Same one fits a V8 doesn’t need so much cranking.

I regard as a must for anyone with an M51 Diesel P38
I’m not anything to do with any company just saying like...
