Hi, a new problem now today the rangie (2.5 dse, automatic) was driving fine (gears changing smoothly) when I pulled in to park, I put it into reverse and it was fine and then when put back into drive, nothing happened. After freewheeling to a safer place it wont engage any gears at all, and makes a slight crunching/grinding sound when trying to engage park, anyone got any ideas or is it new gearbox time?:(

normally i would say you have most likely lost a clutch pack ,determined by oil been black burnt smelling,or free wheel clutch ,but with it grating when you try to engage park unless vehivle moving it would indicate a loss of drive between the wheels and rear of gear box, could be you lost a diff a while ago and now others gone or fault with transfer box etc

Just realised its saying transfer neutral so anyone got a clue if thats relevant?

Well you won't get any drive if trannie is in neutral. You haven't been playing with the fuses under the seat and put one in position 11 by any chance have you? If you have take it out. If you're trying to get it in park with engine running and trannie in neutral no wonder it's grinding when you try to put it in.

Yes, I've just been reading other posts/threads saying the same, I havent put one in myself but the battery has been going flat, is that a cause maybe. I'll put the battery on charge tomorrow and have a look, Many thanks mate!

Have a sniff around under the passenger seat for smells of burning, could be the transfer box ECU has self destructed and selected transfer neutral.

Well thanks for the advice guys, and yes there was a fuse in position 11, but how was I able to drive it like this as I didnt fit it and i've been driving it like this! Anyway onward and upward until the next challenge arises, which I'm sure will be soon and once again guys thanks!

Somewhat of a miracle i would say. You only put a fuse in position 11 to put transfer box in neutral, so the vehicle can be towed.

If the transfer ecu, motor, wiring etc. is faulty it shouldn't have any effect to fit fuse 11,
maybe it rattled into working briefly going into neutral with no gears avaiable
