Anyone out there give me any help on the following. My 92 Disco has run excellent since I bought it but this week suddenly I am having gearchange problems. When I now try to change from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th it is as if there is no direct entry into the gear I am seeking or to put it another way I have to fumble about coming out of 3rd trying to get into 4th and it sometimes tries to go into 2nd. Bloody worrying when it changes to a lower gear insted of higher . Anyone had this problem .Up to now the box has always been precise and a joy to use. Any info chaps.

they are known to develop problems but you usually get some warning. have you been offroading or done anything that might have damaged the linkages???

No, No off road just normal docile running around etc. What do you mean by linkages ,Is the lever not direct to the selector mechanism.

does the gearstick sit to one side rather than the center when in neutral as there a bias plate with a spring each side which can often snap causing difficult gear selection.

Basicly the gearstick should sit between 3rd + fourth when in neutral and is centralised by an upright plate with a spring on each side, this is bolted to the top of the gearbox and you get at it from inside the car by taking the center console out and removing the metal cover on the top of the selector.the 2 springs and the plate cost me about a tenner about 6 months ago as i had this problem on my rangerover classic.

Thanks to all for replies. Also a special thanks to Wreckhunter it seems you were right on the button. I checked lever position as you said and it never looked right, Dismantled top end and found a crack in the bias plate which surely is the problem allowing it to flex too much to one side. Will now look around Monday for a plate and get the old girl back on her feet again, Well done and thanks again. Chas.

Might as well buy the plate new as its only about 6 quid, also check it plate and springs are lined up properly before building the lot back up.

Where did you go to buy the plate and springs, or do you know the part number? How hard was it to replace?

I got the springs and plate from local landrover dealer,
springs are 1 x FRC8490 £4.56
1 X FTC1988 £3.63
And plate 1 X FRC9340 £5.23
