Afternoon everyone,

I'm in need of your help and general wisdom. Went to pick up the rangie from my mums earlier so I could change the diff fluid and replace serpentine and aircon belts and tensioners over this weekend.

Put it into reverse and got around 3-4ft and it stopped, almost like something was sticking (it had been parked up for around 2weeks). Put it into drive and again it would go any futher than 3-4ft. Put it into reverse then heard a slight clunk from the rear. Put it into drive and there was quite a loud bang from the front and then no gears at all. When a gear is selected it sounds like something is flapping about from the front end, gearbox/diff area. Is there any way to narrow down what has gone? There are no warning messages or lights at all and prior to this the gearbox was silky smooth (had the atf and filter replaced 2-3months ago).

I did however notice a slight groaning/rumbling coming from the diffs (both front and rear) on the way back from barmouth last month. It's a 1996 2.5DSE auto with around 229k on the clock.

no tc that I know of and it's an auto. I had it in drive with the handbrake on and couldn't see the prop turning. The car is at my mums and had a drink (to drown my sorrows :D ) so will check again tomorrow without the handbrake on.

If you had it in drive and neither prop was turning, sounds like the transfer box chain has let go, ever checked the oil?
 
Data, I was under the impression the the main gearbox oil also fed into the transfere box? How would I check it?

Oh dear, no the oil is seperate. There is a filler plug nicely hidden, if I remember correctly on the front face above the prop but could be rear.
Drain plug is obvious, oil is ATF but if it's all leaked out you may need to swap the box. Emmotts may have one.
 
Keith, your a star! Is there a dipstick for it?Just been looking on rave and can't see one. Is there a way of checking to see if the morse chain has snapped without taking it off? Or a way of eliminating the gearbox and diff?

For a start being an auto you do have a tc (torque converter). With the handbrake on and drive selected the prop shafts should not be turning. Guess you need someone you trust or owe a lot of money to, to try and drive the car slowly whilst you lie to the side of the car and see what is turning.:eek: The transfer box doesn't have a dip stick but a filler/level plug.:D

Cheers tomcat, I thought tc was traction control :D I'll have a good look tomorrow and with the assistance of the mothership, see if the prop shafts turn. If they don't then I hazard a guess that it points to the transfere or gearbox?

Correct, if they do turn then look at the diff's/half shafts. Check your oil levels whilst you are under the car:)
 
unless diffs buggered or cv etc , i had one that was only running on 1 axle through a bust diff but he didnt notice till other diff went

Had a guy once wanted a clutch replacement, started her up, into gear no movement. When I jumped out and looked underneath the prop's where turning. Diff's fecked.
 
UPDATE:

Well, spent most the day trying to figure this one out. Had a look at the prop shafts and nothing untoward there, everything still in one piece and no movement of any kind. Tried it in drive without the handbrake on (mom was at the helm) and the prop shaft weren't turning, also tried it with drivers side front and rear wheels off the ground, again, no movement. Think I've found the flapping noise (see below video) and it's coming from here (am I right in saying this is the transfere box?
