Hi guys,

I have a 300tdi Disco with clutch/gearbox issues.
I've had a crappy 2nd gear since buying it but with careful changing it's fine.

Recently it's got a little worse, then the clutch release arm broke at the start of one of the forks. Replaced that and it drives... after a week driving it, 2nd gear is awful to change into and 1st and 3rd are getting that way too. Hard to change into and out of.
Also last time I tried using it there was a sound like something chopping... assuming the clutch plate is starting to foul on something else as it spins.

A mate who helped change the fork had a word with his dad and came back with something about one of the clutch or gearbox bearings collapsing causing the problem? Does that sound right? He called it a sync mesh bearing or something like that but I've no idea what that is.

Any ideas???

synchro mesh ,baulkrings are like brakes that match gear speed to box speed allowing you to change gear ,2nd usually wears first then 3rd etc not changing oil regulary speeds this up as worn metal particles are run through gearbox with the oil ,rebuild is required , another used box may be just as worn ,so depends on value to you ,cost £400 to rebuild with new baulk rings ,bearings etc

I was really hoping it wouldn't be a rebuild! I guess it'll add value to it on the plus side.
