what is the best gearbox oil to put in my 95 disco? service book says dexron 11d atf but ive been told that has changed to something else. its a manual.

If it's a manual 300Tdi you'll have a R380 gearbox. Land Rover changed the spec for the R380 from Dexron II or III to MTF94 in about '96, I think.

Ashcroft transmissions website recommends MTF94 for all R380 gearboxes... I'd go with their advice if I were you ;)

Cheers,

If you've got Dexron II or III in there I wouldn't worry overly... it was what LR specified before they changed their mind and went to MTF94 - shouldn't do it any harm, next service change it for the MTF ;)

does anyone know the quantity of oil I'll need to change the oil in my r380 gearbox?

Near an auto shop today so may nip and get some MTF94 oil today.

2.7litres for an R380 if i remember correctly, which i probably dont so its work checking haynes/or the RAVE CD.

Thanks Munster, I just need a resonable idea, I'd rather buy a bit more than too little and go back.

Do you do the transfer box with the same stuff?
Rave and haynes manual been left at home today, sorry.

Sorry to hijack your thread.
Does anyone know how ofter this needs to be changed. Ive had my N reg 300tdi manual disco for a year and have never changed it and I dont know if the previous owner ever did it.
I get a grind sometimes between 1st and 2nd so mabey I need to change my oil.

Thankyou.

Ash : Depends on mileage really and the type of driving, personally I've always changed the gearbox oil everyother time I change the engine oil, so every 12/14k miles. But then I do have a crap load of the oil to use up and my landy and jeep both get used for towing/carrying heavy loads a lot as well as high speed motorway cruising.
