Hi Guys,

Need a little help if possible, i am struggling to check the oil level on my 1995 dhse auto range rover.

the dipstick tell you to check in neutral, idleing when cold.

others say to go through the gears and place back into park then check it.

i have checked this before and over filled the gearbox as i obviously i checked it wong this caused some damage to the box. the dipstick is now showning no oil on it when in neutral ticking over, so i dont want to over fill it again. :(

What is the best method to do what should be the easiest job on the car.

Cheers

put some more in ,level is only that critical if theres not enough for pump to suck or to much that it is pushed out ,though it will work best somkewhere around level mark

You only need to go thru the gears if you had say drained it , leave in Neutral ideling and check dipstick , you don't do it when hot as you can get false reading .

hi there just to tag onto the bottom of this thread as i topped my gearbox up this morning and now lost all forward gears could this be a result of overfilling as it is now showing aout half an inch above the max mark???

It could be yes. Drain some out and try again.

You'll get a bit messy putting the drain plug back in with the oil in full flow so wear some gloves and get some cardboard down before you start.

Gearbox oil level should be check with engine in neutral and cold. I always have to look very closely to see the level on the dipstick, but eyes are probably getting dim.

Gearbox oil cold, start engine run through gears put in park or neutral doesn't matter which, dip and level should be between the two marks.
