I just bought a F1 2004 3 door sport full leather as a bit of a project.
148.000 miles, history, New clutch and slave at 138.000 miles
Replaced all the brakes and lines and thought I would give it a full service before the Mot, so replaced the engine oil and filters and thought I would do the Diff's and gearbox oil.
So' opened the gearbox drain and nothing came out, the gearbox was slightly wobbly but thought that was the bush that wears and gives loads of play, so topped up with correct oil and amount and it dumped it on the drive, I cannot see exactly where, wiped and looked...
So Mot, it went straight through with an advisory of a leak on the gearbox input shaft.
Sorry for the long boring bit to the question..
Is this a big job/dear job??

I really have fallen for this car lol..

Can you see where the leak is coming from?
It's impossible for all the box oil to come out the input shaft, as it's above the normal oil level.

Did you put drain plug back in!?
If it came out that quickly and you were underneath could you not see where it emerged?
The input seal is a weak point and is best changed when the clutch and slave are replaced. The whole assembly is overpriced at around £70 but the seal can be measured and replaced.

As above, this seal only leaks when running.

Yes, it only seams to leak when running, I have a price from a specialist for £500 inc the VAT.
When I refilled I just dropped the car off the stands thinking all was well not noticing the leak till after a drive and sat on the drive, I suppose oil goes along way.

hopefully all sorted this week..
Cheers Bill

Hi all
All fixed but was a big job, inputshaft seal and cone damage due to a cowboy fitting the new clutch before I bought it, the gearbox was held on by only 2 bolts and the clutch basket 4 bolts, the gearbox had to be helicoiled due to stripped bolts, so a total of £750 which £400 was labour.
I know some (driveway fixerish) but am not a mechanic by any means but the Land rover guy said he had never seen anything like this in all his years lol.
I only paid £600 for the car and have replaced all the brake components front and rear and new shocks complete and I'm getting near to 2.5k now :) but this shows how much they get under your skin..
