Hi guys, I'm about to replace all the oils on my 300tdi discovery, amongst a few other jobs, I've heard that filling the gearbox and transfer box are a nightmare and that a pump is needed.......surely not? Any ideas chaps?

it is fiddly but can be done , like i did by just squeezing the ep90 bottle or MHM's trick is to use one them garden pump thingamajigs , or if you have a look in the gallery GRUNT has got some piccies in there to show you how he does it , quite ingenius

thanks, i'll have a look, i used to have a 2.8 trooper years ago and filled the box with a largish syringe...took bloody ages!!!!!

I did the same, just kept filling up a small 500ml squeezy bottle and squirting it in.

I use a small stirrup pump that fits in the bottle and has a short hose, takes 2 minutes to pump 3 litres, got it for £15, refrigeration engineers use them for pumping oil into compressors. Also have used a hand transfer pump from a boat chandlers.

Picture of pump, the long tube goes in the bottle and the handle is pulled up to draw oil and down to pump, pumps about 100ml per stroke

You will get them from any Refrigeration Parts Supplier

Get your missus to hold a funnel, stick a long piece of tubing on it, crawl under the LR and put the pipe in the filler hole, get her to pour a measured amount of oil down the funnel...

Hello
Which ever way you choose stick the oil in a bucket of hot water for 10 mins before and it will flow a lot easier hence making the job a bit quicker

cheers

Phone Automotive Lubricants - Engine Oils - Multipurpose Greases - Aerosols - Morris Lubricants - UK and they'll sell you a gear oil pump and some oil probably, it will definately be worth you buying one as LR recommend replacement of all the transmission oils every 24000 miles / 2 years.

Over in sunny Spain I purchased a large syringe, it was designed for trucks, it holds about a litre and is great. Chuffing expensive though!
