Hi. I am new to this. looking to by a discover 2 2003, when i roadtested i got a loud whirring noise when trying to get into 1st gear also in reverse gear, you can have the clutch down start to engage gear then the noise appears. Help

Given that you will be stationary (hopefully) when you select first or reverse gears, it's most likely the bronze thrust bearing In the end of the crankshaft. You wont hear it on the move.

+1 on Spigot bush. Its not really a thrust bearing, just a simple bronze bush in the end of the crankshaft, it supports the end of the input shaft.
Mine occasionally screeches loud enough to get strange looks in a car park!
Its a PITA to change, engine or box out, you can get it changed if you need the clutch changing.
