Hi. Im new here, kinda need some help. I have 110 hicap, a rough old tractor really. Use it for tree surgery and woodland jobs.

I'm in Somerset with a stuck gearbox. LT77, I was trying to reverse up to chain out some slabs of wood and it just wouldn't go back. Reverse selected ok, but it was like something was jammed in the gearbox, a bit like the hand brake was on. My reverse has been rough as a badger for the last 7 years, but has kept going despite that. I got back to my mates, with only a few pushes to go backwards round awkward turns, but basically I have no reverse. So cant really go anywhere.

Ive taken the cowling off the gear levers, and undone the top ally bit over the main gearstick, but have never been inside the gearbox, and need pointers as to where to go next. I imagine a tooth has broken off and flicked into the mesh, or a selector fork has broken and is 'in' the reverse cog, but actually haven't a clue.

I cant take the gearbox out, I'm by the side of the road, on double yellows, outside a mates house, about 180 miles from my home, with a socket set, and a dog.

Any ideas?

does lever move into the gear position and then is there any noise ?reverse is in main case so not much you can do with box in the vehicle,they are prone to severe teeth wear ,
 
Flip - rather you than me - sorry cant really help as gearbox is beyond me.

Sounds like recovery job. Hoping you have breakdown cover:cell:

Yes lever goes into reverse no problem: when clutch is let out it wants to go, but just won't, engine almost stalls, exactly as if the handbrake is on. Which of course it isn't.
Sometimes a bit of scrunching, yes.
 
I did try to start the engine and have another go 1/2 an hour ago. Thought it might have magically freed itself. It actually stuck in reverse, jammed tight. I had to rock it backwards and stop it with a wedge under the tire, and then I could get gearstick out and into nuetral.

I've checked clutch fluid.

sounds like its either in 2 gears or has a lump of tooth wedged
 
its possible to pull selector shaft pin between the forks leaving one in gear and selecting another, but this then leaves the gear stick without full movement through all gears

Ps any exploded diagrams/photos etc of what I need to look at welcome. Ive trawled the net, but mostly its all about completely stripping gearboxes in nice well equipped workshops, gearbox out etc.

To my untrained brain it feels/sounds like a tooth or other metal in the gear. but suprised it hasn't gone down and stayed in the sump.

theres not much you can do without stripping the gear box ,unless you have some other fault like hand brake stuck on or failure in t/box etc etc , for a better diagnose id need more info like does gear stick move throughout the range or not does it drive in any other gear
 
it sounds like you hope of fixing it in the field.. i'd start making other plans :)
