Gears will select when engine not running (a little stiff maybe but you can select them).

Take it on the road though and it wont go into any gear without extreme difficulty and once its in gear its very very reluctant to come out again.

Once parked up with handbrake on, I have to lift the clutch pedal up past the biting point and depress it again a couple of times just to get the gearstick back in neutral. Also clutch pedal seems a bit softer than before but not sure if thats because i havent driven it for a while (will go to floor but with a bit of resistance)

So question is, is it a clutch problem or something to do with the selectors or something worse?

Try the hydraulics first, bleed them and see if it improves. It's lack of clearance that is causing the problem, so basically your clutch fork isn't pushing the diaphragm fingers far enough to release the clutch.
Have you recently done work on the clutch, or had it been sat parked up for a long time?

No, didnt touch the clutch but the gearbox has been out so it was the first run since refitting. Its been stood for about a month or so

it could sound like clutch not clearing properly , you will have to eliminate that before looking at the box

Sam you posted awhile ago that box would not select gears properly what was the cause then?
I believe this was when you had the box out !

Layshaft wasnt located properly in the outer bearing race causing it to jam up
