Just picked up a 97 4.6HSE, collected from Manchester and drove down to Southampton with no problems, gear change seemed nice and smooth (in fact, much nicer than my other one) BUT, if I select sport mode, when it changes from 3rd to 4th it's like it 'dumps the clutch' even though it's auto (it gives you a kick in the back, the more your foot is down the more violent it is) it also does it in low mode, especially in the higher gears. Has anyone had this issue? I will give it a service, but if it's deemed us, I can replace it. Many thanks in advance, Jason :)

Could be a sticky valve in the gearbox.....do a fluid and filter change and add some Lucas Tranny Fix.....takes about 500 miles to clean the valve block, but if it is a sticky valve, many have had luck with this stuff

the violent down shift is probably the box dropping 2 gears, if it only happens in sport mode, I doubt it's a gearbox problem. Mine will do a violent double down shift when using cruise control at 90Kph and it encounters a hill, it then immediately up shifts one gear so dropping 2 gears was pointless.

It only seems violent on the up shift between third and forth, haven't noticed it on downshift, but then again not really taken much notice. I now have a spares car, so I will have a go at service/Lucas additive first, if that doesn't work I will swap gearboxes. It seems there is always something with these cars that niggles, fix one thing, another, no matter how big or small, will always pop up!
Many thanks for the help to date guys :)

A hard shift between 3rd and 4th is likely to be a sticky valve block with the torque converter lock up not releasing fast enough.
You may need to do 2 or 3 oil changes and several hundred hard miles for the Lucas to take effect. It fixed my box except for the occasional hard shift 3rd to 4th.
