Got it all apart today. I'm definitely in for a 3/4th gear syncro assembly. There was no sign of any detent springs at all!! and there's a missing tooth on the inner bit.

My reverse gear has a couple of chipped teeth so will be replaced.

The other gears on the main shaft are all looking a bit pitted. How pitted is too pitted?

Good news is my layshaft looks all good.

I managed to let the springs and balls out of the 1st/2nd syncro, and whilst trying to reassembly managed to jam one of the springs and wreck it. Any idea where I can buy these springs? Any source for a video explaining the best way to reassembly?

That pitting isn't awful. I'd reuse them just making sure that you're using decent oil and changing it often. It's possible that it happened early on if they weren't machine too well but more likely thrashed on old thin oil. (I change it every year despite low mileage).

Yea okay, that's what I was thinking. I'm renewing the bearings because they all feel a bit rough. In other news I figured out at least one of the noises is either the alternator or water pump which is nice. There's maybe a second noise that's still unexplained but I'll see once I've sorted out the first one.
