Hi all..

When I start my car and put it in 'D' nothing happens and the car doesnt move. Then when I rev it to about 2500rpm it kicks in and says 'Gearbox Fault' and then will let you drive but a little slower, like its in 3rd all the time.

Also doesnt disply 'D' on the left hand side of the LCD display.

I can put it into 1,2 or 3 and drive in these but as soon as it goes in Drive it doesnt like it. Reverse works fine, as does the low range gears...

Theres no noises, or other problems, its had a new battery, starter, fuel injection pump, but has been fine for a couple of months.. now this!

What could be the causes?

Could be the selector switch contacts that control the auto box ECU as it works in the other gears.

i know what this is, its the ECU has failed. its under the passenger seat. get a new ECU on ebay for about £20-£40 make sure all the barcodes and numbers match on the front of the box and should be a straight sway no computer needed. this happened me last summer had to go to 2 main stealers and cost me a fortune.

yes the V8 is different to the 2.5DSE it has to be from a 2.5. and the barcodes have to match other wise it wont work. ring the local breakers yard tomorrow maybe. i got the problem before i knew about this website and bought it from a local breaker for €120 here in ireland, only to realise i could have got it else where for a fraction of the price. keep your eyes on ebay and also look at people who are breaking 2.5dse's

hi brunel here sounds like gearbox or tourque converter had same prob i recomend AMS motor co 07944517919 they done my gearbox £1850,00 all in and mine is a L322 series three they gave me twenty four months warranty and included cooler, tourque converter and gearbox thats the cheapest any where i found and done it in a day so try them, all the best brunel.

So are we saying ECU or convertor?

P38 Ireland, did you have exactly the same problem then? put it in drive, nothing... rev it, then kicks in and throws up the Gearbox Fault?

yes! you are stuck in 3rd gear am i right? drives ok at 30-60mph? over that and its squeeling a bit and under that its struggling? thats what mine was like, if you want to go spend 2K on something that "some guy on the net said" go ahead. start with the cheap fix 1st and work along.

sort of.. but when I put it in drive, it does creep forward, but revving between 1000 and 2000 does nothing, but all of a sudden it kicks in at around 2500 - 3000 revs and then starts moving more..

its because when the gearbox is in fault mode, when this happens the gearbox goes in to 3rd gear, you can take out the gearbox ecu now and start driving round and it will be the exact same. you came on here looking for advice you got it, what you do with it is up to you. reasking the same question wont get you a different answer.

I just wanted to clarify it, sorry! £40 to me at the moment is alot of money, I am sposed to getting rid of the car this week and then it goes wrong on me..

If thats all it is you are a genius, i'll give it ago... and do all the barcodes have to match up? as mine says the part number is 5258, so do i just get the same 5258 or do all the barcodes need to match?

Best thing to do is find one that has the same codes i think the 2nd and 3rd lines are the most important. you can call the main dealer direct and verify that they new box will work by giving them the codes. its what i did and they didnt seem to have a problem. you say £40 is a lot of money to you? to be honest it is to everyone these days. but to fix a range rover with a gearbox fault and not even need to get it on a rovercom to clear a fault your on a total winnner. thanks your lucky stars your getting out with a cheap fix
