Just been up to le shoppe and picking up the other half. Sitting at the lights and I had it in neutral (they take an age to change at this time of day). Lights change and I put the gas down forgetting i'm not in gear. It comes up saying 'gearbox fault' - I put it in to drive and head off but it's revving a lot higher with not a lot of speed.

I don't, as yet, have Nanocom (no money at present to get it..!) so I can't check myself what's going on. Pulling up to my street and waiting for traffic to clear so I could cut in was scary - putting your foot down yields little to no power so, after changing my underkeks here I am.

Any suggestions? I presume I will *need* nanocom or similar to read/clear the fault before limp-home goes away?

Gearbox fault is often due to low battery voltage.
Have you checked the oil level?

So far I've done nothing. Parked up and switched off and back on to make sure it wasn't a fluke message.

Yes, gearbox oil level, checked cold with engine idling after moving the lever slowly through the gears and back to park.
 
Not sure what model you've got, but on gems engine the gearbox oil dipstick is at back of engine on passenger side (behind engine dipstick).
 
I've got a 2000 4.0 HSE - does that help?

No dipstick on later models, post 98 I think.

Yep, no dipstick on thor engines.
I think your going to be right about the battery low voltage. I had the gearbox fault when the tiny battery that was originally in my car started slowly dying.
 
over 14 but no more than 14.5 loads off at around 2k rpm....14.2 seems a magic number and more than 12.5 engine off
 
So, 12.6 when just sitting, 13.4 when car is idling and 14.02 when at 2000rpm. The battery is a bit of a small puny thing though.

On a side note, sounds like the bearing on the alternator pulley is dry - makes quite a noise and if you touch the alternator you can feel a grind.

13.4 at idle is low, 14.02 is a tad low at 2k...magic number is around 14.2 at 2K and above 14 when at idle usually...

That could be a sign, first systems to hiccup on the P38 are the ABS/TC and Gearbox when volts start to drop.

Alternator sounds shagged...they can be rebuilt, but a service exchange unit isn't expensive!

Lucky you, no wonder your eyes have gone. Overhaul the alternator and fit a proper battery before the cold weather comes.

Think I need to change that for a start. Thing is, I do need the gearbox to behave!

Yep a bit undersized...!!!

With luck once you get a good voltage output and have checked gearbox oil level....checked cold, engine running, go through gears and back to N or P, vehicle level, open the level/filler plug and the oil should just dribble out...

Best to get under the car first, engine off, locate level/filler plug, loosen it as they can be sodding tight, start engine, go through the gear selections and the take the plug out and check level...

Filling them up is fun, I use a fence sprayer modified to pump the oil in until it dribbles out, then plug in and take for a drive...what till morning and check level again!
 
Do the faults clear themselves and come out of limp home or will it require a reset from software?
