Hi any tried and tested ways of achieving the removal of the gearbox crossmember easily enough?

Been reading about spreading the chassis rails slightly apart to help the hitting the crossmember with a lump of wood and lump hammer?

Is it not welded in place then?

I typed in Land Rover series cross
Member removal and that pinged up on a different forum, suggesting that it's just tight in between the chassis legs?
Surely that can't be right. I haven't been. Under my 2a in four years but surely it's welded in right?
 
only modified or military chassis have the removable crossmember. if you have a removable one then its really obvious as the bolts are directly under the rails. i have never had to do any more than use a lever to get mine out too so why you would need to spread the rails is beyond me.
 
On a defender I have had to gently spread the chassis legs using a small bottle jack to remove the cross member but on a series it is welded in as standard and cannot be removed, apart form the exceptions already mentioned.
 
My Defender was not welded, though an ex MOD vehicle. It was very tight but I had a small sledge and pounded on it, after removing bolts and it came out reluctantly.
 
Had this argument with an ex work colleague ( ex army mechanic ) many years ago who nu I was into series landy's and was telling me he had a foreigner on at the weekend removing a gearbox from a S3 swb ( civi ) and was bragging how quick he could remove a gearbox from an army series so this should be a doddle so I told him that the X member is welded on and he wasn't having none of it and told me they are all bolted on I said military ones are bolted on but civi ones aren't, anyway he did the job and ended up cutting the X member out as it was welded on as I said to him and obviously welded it back on afterwards but he was still adiment that someone had welded the X member on and it should have been bolted on and that was the last I heard of it :rolleyes:

Ha ha what a plonker, some poee won't take any advice.
So on a series 2a if I want to get the gearbox out at any point I need to either cut out the x member, take it out through the front with the engine or take out the seat box to fetch it out, right?
 
Welded in on standard civilian chassis. I have a good way of removing gearbox with hardtop and roof rack fitted. Rope a scaffold pole across the roof rack to one going through the cab with a chain block on it. Lift up the gearbox and slide it out the door
 
If it is a hard top this is simpler piece of unistrut or channel between the roof edges.

Doesn't that bugger up the inside lip of the roof? Mine is a hard top but I'm going to be stripping it all to do chassis and bulkhead repairs, so hopefully will have a few options for removing engine and gear box.

Severely lacking in time and money as per though.
 
On my S3 I've slid the gearbox back on a plank past the crossmember and dropped it down onto the floor. Seemed slightly easier than trying to lift the box out with a hoist.
 
Had box in and out a few times in last eight years , has not even marked the roof frame . I find I can lift the box up slide the slings along towards passenger door then lower out of door onto a sack barrow to get it into my garage.
