Lots of advice on specific overland websites and forums and LRO has some good articles for overlanding too.

I’d suggest the more standard the better. If you break something, you need o be able to get replacement parts. HD suspension might be a good call depending on how much weight you’re putting on the vehicle, but again, genuine parts. I wouldn’t bother with suspension lifts and the like as you’ll just raise the centre of gravity. A roofrack might be good but a 130 is big enough not to need one. Steel wheels over alloys as they’re stronger and don’t crack. Upgrade hoses to silicone too.

Just my thoughts, others with more ideas will be along...

hello all
what should i put on my defender 130 for overlanding and what shouldn't I put on it ?
where are you going? Motorways? Desert? Back roads?

It would be hard to say what you should have, but I have never used the following:
Winch - Just didn't drive somewhere that my 'house' could end up flipped / stuck / etc. I had a long tow rope and relied on people when i got stuck
Waffleboards - again, didn't do anything that risky, although they did a good job as showerboards to keep feet clean
Snorkle - If I was to wade, my clothes would get wet, so there was no way I would ever do that with my loaded car.

Things I did use
Extended fuel tank - This was great, but it was just piece of mind and made things a little easier. You can always find somewhere if you pre-plan.
Fridge - !!
Good tires - didn't have any punctures or issues
Lights - Lots of LED 12v lots dotted around and that was great for cooking, living, etc etc

In the end, like everyone before me, I'm sure I thought I needed my car to look the part, but in reality it just needed to suit my plans, and my plans were never going to see me 'camel trophy' my way through a jungle.
