Gear stick (or selector mechanism) makes a rattling noise only in 3rd gear. Goes away when I hold the gear stick or push it up.

Anything come to mind before I take the tunnel off and have a look?

Could the the rubber joint between the top and bottom half of the actual gear stick has deteriorated. Mine was doing similar but not all the time, I just put a couple of blobs of weld to stop it rattling

The other thing that sometimes happens is the movement between the gear stick and the tunnel or the foam pad makes a noise. I've sometimes quietened mine down by taking the rubber cover off and pushing the foam down a bit.

Third/Fourth is the neutral position for the stick - in a LT77 anyway - I don't mean the gearbox is in neutral, it's where the selector bias springs are exerting their least force. It's quite likely a bit of wear and vibration means the bias springs are no longer acting on the selector lever at the turret - allowing it to rattle. A little bit of adjustment of the bias adjustment nuts should take out any play. Easy enough to do, just remove the gear knobs, main gaiter and turret gaiter. IIRC, you will need two 11mm spanners for the bolts and locking nuts.
