Now there is a lot of yanking, pulling, stiff and hard stuff going on below, please remember i am talking about a gear selector stick!!!
Yesterday my d2 auto had it' mot which it passed but during the road brake test, when he came back into the yard, the gear selector would only go from D to 1, it would not go to N or R or P, he sat there yanking at it to my horror, forcing it back and forth, managed to get it to N then R then P, came back into garage, did emissions, passed and he did paperwork.
Now the problem is is that it is really stiff getting into Park and out of Park, all other selections feel normal, but I am worried in town or whatever it sticking in P or N,
I did question him and garage owner who is a mate and he was mumbling about not being responsible for something braking while on a test which I understand but it has never ever stuck, got stiff ( don't be rude now) before, been hard to move back and forth.
Could this be caused by the tester not pushing the control button properly when moving the selector?
Or anyone got any ideas what' best to look at first / do , other than having a good single malt to hand.

have a look underneath on lhs at the cable especially whee its clipped to the mount,
have a look at the lever and cable at the top, its possible bowden cable is kinked

I know the cable comes down to the xyz switch as I have had that apart before, so I guess I follow the cable back up looking for any damage or kinks, is it possible to get any oil down the cable from above do you know, if yes does it mean removing center consul?
Oh are there any ball joint connections or anything that wuld seize?

I'd be looking at the release button assembly. As you suspect, the lever may have been forced, damaging the detent arrangement.
Were you having any problems before?
BTW I'm surprised at them doing a road test rather than a roller test.

No problems with selector all all in the 12 months I have had it, always nice and easy, now in and out of Park is stiff, all the rest are as normal now.
I will have a look when I can but have 300 mile drive tomorrow. o_O
