right peeps, any ideas or advise greatly recieved'a week or so ago i replaced the bias plate and springs in my 300tdi disco(r380 box) and all was fine until yesterday, now i'm having real difficulty getting the gears when its in gear its fine it the getting it in gear thats the problem.

the gear stick centres between 3rd and 4th as its supposed to but is very notchy when trying to sellect a gear also when going for first gear the gear stick seems to go further to the left than it needs to,i set it all up as per the manwell and all was great it felt like a new box but now feels like a box of nuts and bolts:confused::(

i get the same problem selecting all gears including reverse.transfer box still works perfik though and it drives well too when i get it into gear.

might sound like a stupid response and im sure youve tried it but what about the clutch cylinders?? a little low on fluid will make the gears hard to engage??

i have a similar problem, 4th gear is a t**t sometimes, not too bad going from 3rd to 4th, when gearing down from 5th to 4th, have to really bash it to get in 4th, checked cluth fluid, all ok........anyone else have this problem? mines a 300tdi disco, 1995.......sort of found an alternative solution....from 5th gearing down, its easier to hold the cluth in, select 3rd - then into 4th (goes in easier??) ....also get a whine in 4th from 30-40mph, any ideas?

sounds like it's time for a rebuild - having to nudge 3rd from 5th to get to 4th is a common problem on earlier 380s as the baulk ring spins just a little to far - there's a revised part that cures this problem - but it's a strip down job to fit

Sounds like, and I don't mean to be funny, a typical bias plate problem!

I'd strip the centre out and have a look to see if it's shifted .. bolts could have relaxed over the first couple of weeks driving and allowed the plate to shift slightly.

thanks for the replies , will check out the bias plate firstly then (sounds easier and cheaper :) ) if it's not that, will look into getting the gearbox stripped....thanks again ..will post an update later

think Paul was replying to the OP - which is a slightly different sounding issue to yours

Sorry, posting from the wifes laptop, 90boy can confirm how old and slow it is .. it's just not updating stuff regularly or quickly, and the broadband's playing up too ... mind, that doesn't excuse me being a numpty ... ;)

I was, as Sean says, replying to the OP, sorry for the confusion.

yup it does sound like what sean said, but before you do commit to expensive rebuilds check these bits out first, your bias plate and springs and if all is ok there remove it and lift out the selector carefully and check that the selector yoke bush and the railko bush are in good order both are just a couple of quid to replace, the selector yoke bush was what was causing all my problems'it had crumbled and fallen out into the main box never to be seen again as there made of plastic:rolleyes:.

this is what i was left with:

my railko bush was fine and is still attached but the selector yoke bush completley gone leaving me with just the steel ball and top circlip.

part # selctor yoke bush ftc2203

part # railko bush frc9985

try reading http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/cant-select-2nd-4th-reverse-gear-67549.html and see if this is similar to your symptoms, tis very easy to do and minimal cost if this is the problem

DV i spent ages searching to see if anyone had had the same problem as me and could'nt find anything :D but yes that is what was wrong with mine ive put a few pics on here but did'nt take any of the fitting unfortunatly wish i had now it could have been put in the common faults section:doh::D

Glad to help, as you probably read, a lot of peeps were advising of complete gearbox rebuilds for a 2 quid plastic ball.

but a new 2 quid plastic component isn't going to resolve a whiny GB or having to nudge 3rd to get from 5th to 4th so don't get spending yer box rebuild money on beer yet jonb76

I agree Sean, I was trying to help the OP with his problem rather than jonb76, which does sound significantly different and far more expensive

My disco will not go from 5th to 4th either and I have to keep the clutch in and go to 3rd then into 4th. What is the bias plate as I am not a gearbox person and is it an easy fix????
