Hi, my first post on this site so apologies if I do anything wrong! The gear knob on our 2005 TDI has come off due to the rubber insert perishing. Just rung dealer who said they want at least £120 for a new entire knob (the leather one). Can get the cheaper version but I’d like to keep it the same.
Any idea where I can get such an insert?
Thanks!

I found some reinforced rubber hose cut a bit off and glued it in the knob. Think it was an old power steering hose.

You could try glueing the insert back into the gearknob, if you can find a string enough glue.

Or alternatively fill the hole with epoxy, let it set and then drill it out to a suitable diameter so that the thread on the gear lever will cut a new thread into it. That’s how they come from the factory, with no thread.

I had mine fail, and just cleaned out most of the rubber from the gear knob. I then filled it up with silicone roof sealant, and put it back on the gear lever. Let it dry, and it holds perfectly. It still has some compliance, and feels like stock.

98 300tdi basic knob but same problem.
Gorilla glue (good stuff all round) activates with moisture and rock solid.
Does expand as it cures though so go careful.
