I am having problems with shifting red knob gear when the plug and spring plunger are put in. it seems the only position that it allows me to screw in the plug is with the gear in the back position but once in i cant shift it? is there an intermediate position as on the diagram in the workshop manual it shows 3 groves on the selector shaft.

or is there a trick to it

Are you trying to shift it with the lever, or just pulling the rod - (that would be difficult)?

sorry for late reply, all sorted now but was pulling with lever. it turns out the plug i was sold had a shoulder inside and so didnt allow me to compress the spring enough to get the thread to bite...
