will a TD5 box fit into a 300tdi, 110 defender?

If there both R380 boxes then yes. If somebody has changed/swaped it with some other random box then your guess is as good as mine!

I guess bell housing would have to be swaped?

No it does not fit, input shaft is different!

Have bought a recon from TM Transmissions, seems to be 100% genuine.

Different in what way? Size, splines?
Just get the correct clutch plate and you're sorted.
