I posted a thread yesterday about my Master Cylinder Clutch having some problems, this was replaced today, the car was taken for a test drive when the problems started happening today, he beleives its something to do with a cyclinder in the gear box, he said it will cost a fortune to fix, i am wondering if anyone else has had the problem? I don't know what to do if it is worth fixing or not, i only bought the car 2 months ago (private).

EDIT: It's the Clutch Slave Cylinder, but as my car is the TD4 it is more difficult to change, so looks like a garage it is, does anyone know how much this is likely to cost?

i thought td4 clutch cylinders were supposed to be replaced as a pair?

but as yu is a gurlee, i reckons there may well be a couple of guys willing to help out a damsel in distress for cakes and erm... Bristols eh? deffo help that way :).

You dont change the master and slave as a pair, well , because the slave is a pain in the ass to change :)

Also if you've just had the master changed and within a day its started to feel soft, then i'd try rebleeding it first.

Its almost impossible to release the 'quick release connector' (surely an ironic name?), without drawing air into the system.

You can bleed them up, the pedal feel perfect , roadtest it , its all good. Park it up overnight and return the next day to find its all squishy again (air in system).

Bleeding it is a piece of cake for anyone who owns an 11mm (i thinks?) spanner.

Ok, just read you thread from yesterday.
1st thing to do is as vissie said get the system power bled, sometimes normal bleeding doesn't work
If that fails with you saying the pedal is staying down it would more than likley be a goosed slave cylinder...Were you getting a whining noise when you pressed the clutch?. Worse case is ........gearbox out and may as well change the clutch at the same time to save future expense....about £500.
Although you don't mention what year your car is....as I believe although may get told off .........some of the earlier ones have bracket for the slave that can bend although I don't know if this was for petrol or doozle models,.....but as you say you had the master changed, I'm sure the earlier ones were a one piece master and cylinder.

doubt it was ever bled properly if at all.

IF there is still fluid in the master cylinder reservoir then it shouldn't of drawn air in which would suggest air was already present from disconnecting the pipework.

K series are one piece clutch hydraulics.

Td4 are 2piece.

No idea bout L series, im not as old as you guys :p

less of the 'old' :)
Easy to remember, PG1 gearboxes (L series and 1.8K) use the external one piece system. The Getrag gearbox (Td4s) have separate internal concentric slave cyl.

Definitely worth bleeding it first.

...but, from my experience, one knackered cylinder tends to take the other out (how, why, I know not). So if your master cylinder has been replaced, bargain on the slave going too. Yes, it is inside the bellhousing, so it's a gearbox-out job to replace it. Long job, I'm afraid.

The slave cylinder is integral with the clutch release bearing too, so if you have been hearing a whining noise, chances are that will go away with the new parts fitted.

Definitely get the clutch replaced too as it's a lot of effort and cash to have to do that at a later date as it involves taking the gearbox out again.
