Today I discovered just how nasty gear oil is when it's in your face and all down ya bloody arm yuck!! My defender 110 has just reached 160000 miles so thought I would treat her to some 80/90 gear oil and thanks to some fantastic HOW TO posts four it quite easy. So after changing the gear and transfer box oil and then the front and rear doffs I took her for a test drive. For some reason it is now stiffer than ever to change into 2nd gear.

I found a lot of filing on the gear box drain plug (see pic) and wonderd if this was normal. I refilled the box till It started to drible out as told. Any one had the same probs or any ideas on thicker oil or additive ??

yes fine in diffs and transfer box but in gear box you need atf or mtf as baulkrings have to strip oil from gear cones to align gears ,gear oil is to thick and will damage them

Thanks just wish Halfords was 24 hours so I could go get some mtf and do it now.

No chance of getting any sleep tonight will be stewing:mad::mad::frusty::frusty::mad2:

I don't think you'll get MTF94 from Halfords tbh mate, but you will defo get ATF DII or DIII.

Land Rover and Honda dealers stock MTF94, or you will get it from Euro Car Parts by the litre. So I'd be making a trip to your local ECP in the morning :)

Its fine in the diffs and most transferboxes., but some transferboxs need gl4 not the newer gl5. It dependes on how old your landy is but when is it ok to use gl5 I cannot find the answer, some td5s use the old tranferbox and thats why I always use gl4 in the transfer box ( gl5 melts brass)

LT77 takes ATF. So I'd use that. Dextron II or III, the latter supersedes the former.

I've heard many people say that using MTF94 (as specced for the R380 gearbox) in an LT77 works OK, but I tend to stick to what Land Rover (and Ashcrofts for that matter) recommend, which is good old ATF :)

As an aside, unless you've driven it miles I doubt you've done massive damage to your gearbox.

gl5 has yellolw metal corrosive properties all lt230 transfer boxes have yellow metal selector forks ,diffs dont

Atf ordered and reserved for collection at 0900 thanks every one for your impute. :):)

only went 1/2 a mile up the road and back so hopefully will be ok.

My local agri place sells Valtra tractor oils, so have used those for the last couple of years and I haven't had any issues at all - my last oil changes were the g/box and engine last summer. I think if your happy with the quality of the oil then the exact spec isn't too critical.
