Hi there, I have noticed a small amount of very clear thin oil on my garage floor for a while now. Trying to trace it this weekend i have noticed it is coming from somewhere around the top of my gear box - I think. The reason I say this is there is a soft sponge material around the top half of the gear box and this is completely soaked with this oil. The problem is I cannot find the source of the leak.

Any ideas?

Hi

This sponge on mine was totally saturated with diesel. It was also leaking diesel out on to the garage floor . I was leaking out of the fuel pressure regulator. Its on the drivers side top rear of engine. This is an ultra common problem on TD5's. It should be pretty obvious if it's diesel due to the smell. If it is the regulator it should be £90 for the part plus no more than 1 hours labour. It's an easy enough DIY job although a bit fiddly.

When the car is driving along, the wind rush makes the leaking diesel track back underneath the car so ends up along the floor and gearbox foam etc.

Cheers

Thanks Andy, after your explanation and web link I can confirm the problem as you describe. The sponge is soaked with water from the road, diesel and who knows what else.
Now to get it repaired!
