Hello All,
I have a 200tdi Disco with 159,000 on the clock I have a couple of things I would like to pick your collective brains about .....My gear box works okay but when in 5th gear it makes a noise ( sort of Humming) I went to see a gear box specialist who suggested that it was caused by a lack of Oil in the box ( he did not check it ) and that topping up would cure it! (with ATF, will try tommorow) has anyone else had a similar problem and what was the outcome?
Second question My intemitant wipers do not work , where is the control unit and is the unit common with any other rover or BL model?
Thanking you Harddrive

Sorry .... cant resist.

I also have aproblem with my intermitant wipers. First they work .... then they dont.

I can't recall what the correct oil is for the gearbox but I wouldn't go putting ATF in a manual box m8.

What oil should I use in my LT77 gearbox?
We recommend ATF Dextron 2 or 3.

(from mr ashcroft).

ATF is the recommended oil for LT77 gearboxes as Ormus says.

Your gearbox man should be the expert - try it, if it's low then it could make a big difference especially if it's just a worn gear, I'd be inclined to replace the oil entirely, that way you will see if any 'bits' fall out with the oil, and fresh oil will work much better than old, unless you know it's been done recently of course.

Sorry about the ATF bit .... seems a strange fluid to use on a manual box but I stand corrected .... in the corner,,,,,with a big white pointy hat on with a "D" on the front..... and my gob firmly shut :)

can we see a big photo of the disco?
im dying to see whats in the back. atm machine from salford tesco express?

I would deffinatly advise putting ATF into the box as it requires it for a purpose and thicker oil will ruin it. These transmissions have a slightly unique feature in them, that they have an oil pump in them which sprays the oil across the top to allow good lubrication.

How can something be slightly unique? :D

Slightly unique bit is that LR didnt bother designing a lubrication system to get to the final reduction gear until 1997 :(
But atf type of oil is the correct stuff - usually a red colour
