I have a problem with third gear, when you change from 2cd to third the gear box grates as it goes in, the only way it dosen't do it is to let the revs die to tick over first then put it in gear ( no good going up hills ! ). If you change from third to 2cnd it does it no mater what you do. I have been told it might be simply low on gear box oil, but sounds to simple to me ! Its on a 1988 90 2.5td . I am going to take a look at it this weekend to work out if I have to take it to a garage, any ideas what's wrong ? Thanks,

sounds like the synchro is on its way out... they can last for ages like this though... give us a shout if you need a new lt77 box as i dug one out today :D

if reverse is left and up, its an LT77 - its a common fault. call Ashcrofts, or Fleck.

Avoid 3rd...I managed to drive 6 months without reverse.

One learns to choose parking spaces with care.

yes worn baulk ring box will need to be stripped tp replace, wre it is then worth replacint 5 x brg and the other 4 x baulk ring ,2nd and 3rd usually go first as they get the greatest stress during changes ,better do to it sooner than later as it contaminates oil ,£100 for parts to do all

Common situation with old LT77 boxes. It doesn't mean your box is about to implode so learn to live with it unless you like spending money.

1st - check your clutch fluid then report back - and make sure you're pushing the clutch ALL the way in!

Also do the gear change really methodically and slowly - it will make a world of difference - control the beast, don't let it control you!

Oh and check the gearbox ATF levels.

Hi, thanks for all your advice, fluid levels good , double clutching fine on up change but no good for down changing, going to remove it from the beast next week and managed to get my mate to repay a favour whos a mechanic to replace the required bits . Result !

Levels may be good but when was the gear box and transfer box fluids drained and replaced? I had an issue with 2nd gear tending to crunch....... I drained mine and it was very dark sludge. Replaced the fluids.... problem solved. You may get lucky... worth a try?
