Have 2.5 DSE Rangie (2001) Auto which has developed a distinct hum or drone when I lift off the accelerator power, has anyone had any similar experience to enlighten me about what might be going wrong?
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

Have this now for nearly 6 years, delightful, no major problems, 3 suspension bellows replaced, radiator, injectors, 117k miles on now.

it sounds like "Torque Spin" (yer wheels are turning the gearbox) rather than the other way round Could be a UJ or the Viscous coupling giving it some noise

I'd check yer Uj's fer play first of all

Yes, that actually makes sense to a non techie, will ask my Rangie guy to look at this.
Uj's are universal joints ?? :), viscous coupling he should know about.
the drone goes down in tone and volume as jeep slows down, so the idea you have suggested fits in well (I think).

Rear diff.

The noise seems to be more centrally located beside me than behind me ??

Ok lets go for output shaft bearing then. A drone when to release power is highly likely to be a bearing loading up.

sounds possible, more to consider/ check out by my guy, great pointers.
At least no one (so far) has suggested a new gearbox ;) thankfully.

One other thing that is concerning me of late is the variation in the temp gauge for no immediately apparent reason.
Radiator recently replaced, but this pre-dates that, temp can vary from just below the white line on gauge (normal in attached pic) to being more or less vertical (hot in pic), coolant level is constant, so no leaks happening. one other thing is that heat level goes cold when gauge rises, and turning up the heat controls brings gauge back to lower level.

Air lock in heater matrix i would think. Also check sender unit.

Airlock or thermostat stuck open, the gauge should be at 12 o'clock when the engine has warmed up.

Yes, it should, that was the normal until now but i was just unsure about it for some reason
