hi ive found a gearbox for my disco1 the breaker wants160.00 which includes the transfer box.he said its all good.but its done 150.00.would you say this is a lot of mileage for one.

i bought a 'good' 2nd hand gearbox for a disco i had and broke in about 1000 miles.id advise just haveing your old 1 fixed at a transmiision place.it mite be less than you think.i had mine checked over recently and a new seal fitted for £40.it was only basicly an hours labour i got charged

i did inquire yesterday.but they said it would be cheaper buying a secondhand one. mine has synchro problems.lots of play between gears.and the out put shaft has lots of up and down play.

I would say that sounds alright for a main gearbox plus transfer box.Make sure you put new oil in both, when you install.

Before you part with your cash, undo the drain plugs on both and check for big lumps of metal. If there are any, apart from filings you may have issues. both plugs are magnetic so you should be able to tell quite easily.

hi guys just a little up date.brought a gearbox today r38.cost me £100.00 from a breaker.he said all tested and good. so i drained oil when i got back and there was fine metal filings clinging to the magnetic sump plug. no lumps of metal came out and the oil was quite clean. done the same with the transfer box. so i have it back on the motor plus fitted a complete new borg and beck clutch set.pedal feels nice. should all be completed by sunday then the road test.

hi yes .really straight forward. you just disconnect the difflock mechnisum.rod. then take out the 6 bolts then it just slides off the shaft. really easy job.

oh just re read your message. not sure if you meant the above message. or fit the complete gearbox and trans to venicle. quite straight forward .just quite a few things to unbolt. but i take out the consol and rivited plate over the gear sticks.then i drop a strong arm engine hoist through passengerside door and hoist it off and back on did it on my own.i have done a few though its more figgity than awkard.to get to the bolts around the top of bell housing i drop the gearbox mounting crossmember off then lower the back end of box then its easy to get to the bolts.hope this helps.

Yeah brilliant cheers mate, just trying to save myself money and start doing things myself! Been quoted £250 to install new gear and tranny, would rather have a bash myself though. What did u do just jack the car up? Dont wanna fcuk up half way through and not be able to drive to the garage for them to save me haha

When I did this job I put front and rear axles on stands to give more working room.

Then I used a trolley jack to raise the gearbox in place.
