im daniel from sunny eilat in israel i just got an old landrover series 1 station wagon dated 1958 (first hand owner) from my systers husband. it seems that beying a pain in the ass sometimes can be fruitfull :)
anyway i found it in a realy ****y state. ,missing bonet, smashed left fender, rust under the body, no seats busted engine and the list goes on...
would like to get some tips of where to get started... i have a marine mechanics experiance and good hands... no money but im working on it. i know this king of restoration needs a good budget and a time frame but becouse i have no money, time is not realy an issue... well it is cos i want it so bad...

hey a question... my landy is from 1958, i know in that year they added 2 inches to the shassi for a diesel engine, but i have a 2 littre petrol engine i have no idea if mine is a 107 inches long or 109 i guess i sould messure...
im planning of getting another engine but i want a reliable one what engine do u think nost suited???
i would like making it run as new but stay with the same 1958 looks.
any ideas???

Tell the truth, yer was kipped up at yer sisters house and yer brother in law chipped you out and told you to get a fooking job, he gave you a landie wif fookall seats and bits, wif rusty holes all over it, and a fooked enjun.

Yer livin in it now and came up wif the bright idea one morning that you would renovate it wif fookall money, and that's fruitfull.

I guess that's what yer get for being a pain in the arse.

Ok where to start.

Do a complete inspection on it, comprise a list of everything it needs in relation to parts, assess the rust and then make up a price list, and make sure you can get the parts you need.

In relation to skills are you able to weld do you have tools, do you have a place to work on it.

Sit down with your lists and make up times for all the jobs being extreemly generous with them, you wont be able to get them right but it's purely a guide for the minute.

Do you have all the legal documents for it.

Then when you have all these facts sit down and decide if you have the time, money, motivation, and ability to achive it because it's a massive undertaking.

oh dave for yuor question i do know how to weld but didnt work with aluminium b4 and i have all the documentations for it. its frozen.
it stood like this for 15 years. the owner says the oil presure fell and he killed the switch imidietly not that it helps or something.
i know this engin got 48 h/p when it was new and was used as agenerator.
i would like to boost some power with a newer engine. dont know what engine to put... would like a v8 but i dont think i can legely do that here.

Forget about the engine for the minute, you are talking about serious work here. In a workshop with all the equipment required it would take months to get that vehicle restored, if restored is what you are looking to do, running might even be the same if not totally impractical.

You need to know what it needs, "as I said previously" 15 years standing still has done it no favours, and you need to do a proper inspection on it. don't buy fookall for it until you do as I said and that means a strip down, wheels off brakes checked etc etc, it's going to be full of hidden problems, like a fooked gearbox, or wheel bearings, or clutch etc.

I mean is the chassis ok or is it rotten, get down there with a hammer and check it. If it's been laying for that long then the brakes are going to be stuck on, as will the clutch.

Take some more pics of the interior and body and chassis, engine bay and so on to give us some idea of what it's like, and I'll get back to you again.

What realistically do you expect here, and in what time scale, and without any inspection at the minute, how much do "you" think it will cost.

Don't suppose it will run will it, it helps for the inspection process.

I think it's a silly question, but miracles do happen, and you are in the right country, but I don't even think god could get it going again, but there's a challenge for you, wif pics of you tearing up the street.
 
its a 107.
Don't worry about never having welded aluminium, the welding you will need to do will be on the chassis, which is steel. With your climate, or more to the point, presumably lack of salt on the roads, do vehicles rust? You may be lucky.
The 2 litre engine has a reputation for starting even after being standing for years.
 
imI'm lucky cos eilat has a 15-20% humidity but there is some rust on the shassi. other then that the body looks fine. imI'm relying on friends from work. iI have a good experienced mechanic and a guy who has a bodyshop and some one who has a registration and motor check up station. iI checked the landy. the brakes r total loss and was thinking of replacung them to disc brakes... iI guess imI'm looking for about 5000$ of restoration cost. imI'm lucky to live near aqaba city in jordan where they have lots of spare parts for series landys all with the curtesy of the gr8 british army...

p.s: do anyone know hows's the haynes restoration manual? is it anygood? iI just got one.

The haynes manuals are not too bad, good for some things but they don't always do things the way they are done in garages, but good for reference.

If you're going to do engine and so on, and with a view to cleaning up the chassis then can you not lift the body off, this will give you much better access to the axles, springs etc.

It looks from your notes that you want to upgrade, bigger engine, disc brakes etc, so I wonder if you need to look at it from a different angle.

I have the rave disc which gives comprehensive information on some disco stuff engines gearboxes and loads more. Some of the guys on here must have the series disc and I'm sure they will give you a copy if you ask.

If you want the disco disc pm me with your details and i'll burn one and get it off to you.
