We're in Cumbria w/c 4/7/11 and we'd like to do our very first go at green laning.

The Gatesgarth pass looks like a good one to try. Can anyone whose tried it let me know what it's like on the ground? It's obviously not overgrown, but is it practical for a complete novice? I need some local knowledge here!

Is anyone up for a meeting one day during that week to join us for the trip?

Tigger.

Not the best place to start greenlaning and you need to apply for a permit 1st, look on the Lake District National Parks website for Byways and UCrs, but be aware some can be a bit tricky :) and there is not always a mobile phone signal

Thanks.

I could have applied for a license, but anything over 100" wheelbase isn't allowed and it's suggested that Freelanders don't use it. Either that's good advice, or one of the trattor boys works for the National Park

Time to think again....

not sure if those freelanders have a low box, would be a tad tricky without one ;)

No, there's no low range. However, nothing with a wheelbase over 100" can use the track, so we'll never know for sure! I was amazed to see that a RR Classic has a wheelbase of exactly 100", while a Freelander's is 104 1/2".

Still on the look out for an appropriate track to try....

I think it also says thats its not suitable for soft roaders i.e something with no low range box, as some of the acsents and descents are quite steep with no room to gather speed for the ups.

dont forget to check if the byeways are open,

i think you would of been ok on gatesgarths pass

but always go with a mate

so he can take pics and help out if you have a prob..

I've now done my first proper green lane! - Boolte Fell, as featured in a recent supplement in the LRO magazine. Really not too bad at all and all the more fun to have done it in a "Gaylander" with less than 1,000 miles on the clock!
