The stays on my cat flap are shot so am looking to replace them. Then got to wondering if a pair of gas struts could be modified to fit. Any thoughts or previous attempts??

Don't see any reason why not, length is the only real issue that needs to be right

I'm sure I have seen pix on here from people that have done it.

I agree with others, the original stays aren't a very good design and I am sure it wouldn't be terribly pleasant to get the flap on your head

A friend of mine got a couple off a Piccassa from the scrappy and only needed to use one for his Series I catflap.
