Hi , been to look at a 2004 defender 110 csw today and was surprised to see it had a galvanised chassis.Present owner doesnt know why and status check doesn't show any recorded accidents so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to whether any ever came out of the factory like this or should i be suspicious. Any advise would be welcome

old one rotted away like usual , I would see it as bonus but them my cars are too old to be worrying about accidents in a previous life etc :D

If the owner didn't know, then ask him for the price before he works out how much it is actually worth.

Just make sure it is not sprayed with cold galvanized paint:eek:

thanks for reply, how can i tell whether it is sprayed galvanised or proper galvanised. what is proper galvanised ,is it hot dipped or done by electrolysis ??

Hot dipped.Paint will scrape off very easy. Would think a 04 model with a galvanized chassis would of been a rebuild, from a wreck. Look for the chassis number if a replaced chassis doubt a number would be there. Anyone know what size the number stamps are?

My 110 is on a factory galv chassis, although it has been imported from South Africa, Also it from 84 so a tad older than that one

dont touch it with a barge pole it'll probs be nicked am nt sayin it is but at that age they nick em the grind number off chassis then galvanise them so u cant see that number av been grinded off + looks like a new chassis

How many owners has it had? If its only had one owner previous to this one ( ie two in total) then you could try to contact the previous owner via the details on the V5. One of hem must know the history, or why the chassis has been replaced. If any more than the two owners then you have ne easy way of finding out, although you can contact DVLA to request the details of the previous owners. in this case, they may give them to you.

its had 5 owners. when a galvanised chassis is fitted is it normal practice to have the vin stamped on the new chassis?.i done one of those online car checks and all seems ok, but does that mean it really is ok. its got a private plate which was fitted a few months after new, but the original plate tallys with the private one according to the check. any thoughts?
