There was someone a year or two ago that had a range rover classic shell galvanised, I'm sure it was in a pull out in one of the mags, so it can be done

It would be down to price I think.. mine is 20 years old and although its rusty once you clean it off its still very sound underneath... Body, like everyone says is another story though, if I were spending the money I would buy all new steel panels, sills, floor etc and get them all dipped or would they be to thin??...

There is a process of spray galving. I have done body panels for other vehicles in it before. Never tried the underside of a landy though. Something for a project defender in a few years.

Would certainly buy a galv one.

Mine has a mahoosive hole in it just infront of the LHS rear wheel.
Just need to find a new MIG plant or find someone who has one i can borrow for an afternoon.

Just out of interest and slightly off topic. Would anyone buy a remanufactured shell if one was available. Sort of makes sense if the chassis is galved to last, then maybe the same care should be shown to the shell.

Well I'd have one, but only of the shell could be fixed, was having a chat with the missus and apart from a Fender there is nothing out there we would want for the dogs etc other than the Disco. All the alternatives are expensive or crap.

Like with most vehicles, if there are enough people who love em/need em and they are cheap and easy to fix they should go on forever, (learning to weld has certainly extended the life of my one):D.

when the supply of disco1s runs lower and the prices start to go up, then i'm sure people will start making them. but atm it's not cost effective when discos are so cheap.

I would be interested in manufacturing a chassis from scratch, the problem is getting all the dimensions for the fixing points, i wonder if there is engineering drawings out there for the remanufacture of parts?

should be able to pick up an old chassis good enough to use as a template for cheap enough. once stripped a lot will just be sent to the scrappies

I'm in the process of stripping 2 discos to make 1 'good' one, so i'll have a spare chassis at some point.

Its not that easy to copy off an existing chassis though thats 20 years old, lots of brackets might be out of position. I'm confident i could copy it just not sure how accurate it'd be to the original spec.

could you not compare both chassis? any deviation, consult a third?

must be some chassis plans somewhere

I've found plans for a series chassis for re aligning it, if there's something similar out there for the disco then that'd probably do the trick.

Disco 1 should be in existence for eternity.

Some people require simplicity over technology.

Agreed, on both counts. I came back to a Disco after an insane experience with a foreign piece of :censored: - rotten - electronic "issues" etc etc etc....

I am NOT going back to anything. I have decided I WILL have a Disco for the rest of my life - because they are simple, and relatively, cheap to fix..

For instance, on the foreigner... "Ah yes sir, the problem is a switch on the gearbox... there are three, and they are £600, plus fitting".... Ouch says I - "That's the price each sir, ....", :wtf:

One foreign POS sold...

One Disco1 bought!

So, yes, in reply to the OP, I would buy a galv chassis for a D1 - in fact I intend to, in the non too distant, and rebuild a body onto it.

I would defo buy one, the rear of mines has already been rebuilt once, it would be a good piece of mind that at least some of it will be rust free!
Body wise, i'd personally strip it all back, clean it all up, weld the crap out of it, then take my time with a tin of Hammerite, building up lots of coats it the problem areas, or maybe use some of that spray on load liner that people seem to like spraying on Defenders.
