Good afternoon,

I know this topic has been covered a few times, but I’m after a definitive answer from people who have used these companies. I’m not after a debate on whether a galv bulkhead is the right choice, or that it’s too expensive. I’m just after opinions of the company’s workmanship.

I’m wanting my knackered defender bulkhead repairing and galvanising. I’m wanting the original bulkhead repairing, so not an exchange unit.

I’ve been in contact with Ashtree and Classic bulkheads. Both of which are near enough the same price.

Has anyone used either of these for this service? And what are your opinions of their work?

I’ve had a search about and Ashtree has a lot of mixed reviews, some excellent, some bad, i.e. they returned the bulkhead and went elsewhere, welds were not ground back, patchwork panels used on the footwells etc..

I cannot find any reviews about classic bulkheads in Birmingham, so has anyone on here used them?

sorry as i know not much of what your looking for, but would this question be better suited in the series or fender sections ??
 
I've got an Ashtree bulkhead. Pleased with it overall. Mine arrived within 3 weeks of ordering. I also bought a galv front panel and cappings off them - all fine. I can see a weld patch on the drivers side top bulkhead corner but apparently galv sticks more to welds even if they are welds which were originally ground back. I could have rubbed back the galv to flat it or skim with some filler to lessen the effect but wasn't really too fussed as it's not a museum resto. Didn't want to compromise the galv. They also fit nice ribbed panel footwells like original.
Another one to consider for Bulkheads is Andover Landrover. Not used them but heard good things

Your right about the galv showing up the welds, it sits a lot thicker on them but if the weld has been flush finished before hand its safe to sand the galv down flush again before painting.

Yes, that's the thing though....how can you be sure they have been fully ground back before galvernising? I didn't want to risk it and worked on the basis that thicker galv can only be a good thing.

I think many criticise being able to see the weld lines after galvanising, not realising that this is mostly unavoidable but correctable.

As a matter of interest how much were you quoted? Am saving for new/galv/fully repaired for my series 2 but dare not get on phone just in case I spend money I ain't got lol
 
Glad you asked these questions as im in the same position
there is a guy on ebay that is doing them
but he is a pain to get hold of

I've had various items galvanised over the years, but never a bulkhead. I used to use Highland Galvanisers and they quote £7 to £10 per m2. If i remember correctly they had a minimum charge of £90. Taking into account welding repairs and prep, I reckon this could be done a lot cheaper than the prices quoted??? Has anyone ever went down this road? Issues i could see would be possible warping due to heat involved in the process. Some kind of bracing might be required welding in prior to hot dipping ??
