hope it was ok, but put it into a new post so if someone wants to know what the transponder does inside the key, here is the answer and saves having to read through endless posts

hope it may be of interest or help someone one day

Ignition Switch Transponder Coil and Key Transponder

The transponder coil is supplied with a modulated electric current from the immobilisation ECU. When the key transponder is within 2 cm (0.78 in) from the coil, with the ignition switch in the position I (AUX), an energy transfer from the coil to the transponder takes place, similar to the transformer principle, at a frequency of 125 kHz. The ECU de-modulates and decodes the received data and compares this with identification code data from the ECM. If the data is correct the ECU allows starter operation.

When the key is inserted in the ignition switch, communications between the transponder and the immobilisation ECU, via the transponder coil, occur as follows:

A unique key identification number is passed to the ECU
A random code is transmitted by the ECU to communicate with the key transponder
An encrypted response to the random code is transmitted from the key transponder to the ECU.

Thought u meant tother ecu lol, thank fcuk I ain't got any of this Gubbins the fobs bad enough lol

lol, confused u soon will be, cause i know i am,

think though ive got most of my head round it now,

ive got the transponder chip in my keys

have since found my spare key and put it away safe

need to get another key-fob though and thk christ I've got the hawk eye i can use to program them , lol

Is it similar to NFC tech? Be able to program them with our phones soon lol

had to think then and just realised ive got that on my blackberry , got that linked through my radio and tom tom, so keep it in my pocket so when i get in the car it links automatically via bluetooth and phone calls come through the speakers

think how technology has moved on considerably in cars ,

see some of the garman sat navs have engine diagnostic read outs , plug a small unit into the diagnostic socket and works via bluetooth , but has to be obd2 compliant

sorry sidetracking as per usual, :):):)

You can buy them on eBay for ya phone .. If they work

I've found out you need a key transponder chip programmer to program the new key chip, the t300 maybe suitable and is been discussed in another post on the forum.

yes its normally the testbook but the t300 seems to get good reviews

as long as it can delete the old coded keys off the ecu and be able to reprogram fingers crossed should be ok

its also got to be able to pair the key fobs too,

my hawkeye will only pair key fobs

if the t300 does indeed perform will be a lot cheaper than having to spend over £400

will be nice to get feed back so we know if it works or not

got an email back from the company that sells them and spoke about the t300 and told me it doesn't work 100 percent with the freelander

I took the chip out of my key and it's a PCF7930AS chip it's not the one available on ebay.

I looked up the data sheet for the philips/nxp chips and the PCF7930AS is a read/write chip so i think it may be rewritable so an old key from another freelander with this chip can be reprogrammed to another vehicle, i'm not 100% certain but looks that way to me.

Here is the data sheet

Does any one have any old freelander mk1 keys with this chip laying around that i can buy from you or know any where i can buy a PCF7930AS chip.

This device on youtube looks easy to use to program a key if you already have one existing key to copy, looks like you just read the information on your existing key then write it to your new key without going any where near your car.

Auto Locksmith Tool AD90 P+ Key Transponder Programmer---OBDChina - YouTube

after spending hours on end looking into all of this found that u need to get a testbook to sync the keys with the ecu or a garage that has the relevant program

seem where people take out a transponder and put it near the ign barrel and use a cheap key without one , however it will allow thieves to steal it a lot easier as any cut key would start the car and also ins would be void

when programming new keys the software will stop any other keys from working , as they clear codes within the ecu so if keys are stolen it stops people from returning to the car and nicking it

far better to buy a key that is bought by using ur vin number so that when its programmed will then have a secure and valid ins as i think for just trying to save a few quid is not worth it

hope ive read it right and the last thing i wish to do is for this post coming across as rude in any way as thats not my intention

hope u find a company that will program the key for u, plus a lot of this software also relies on the car being obd2 compliant

found this company where they copy your original key and funny enough is only about 10 miles down the road from me in orpington kent
